Greater efficiency in CSSDs: Container and trolley washers with new features

Gütersloh/Düsseldorf, November 12, 2014 No. 157/2014

Exceptionally economical: Now also covers instrument reprocessing

Large-chamber decontamination units from Miele Professional have been used successfully by hospitals for many years to clean such bulky loads as containers, trolleys and bed-frames. Now, a new circulation system allows CSSDs to efficiently and rapidly wash and disinfect standard surgical instruments such as scissors and forceps. Furthermore, the new Combi Eco System reduces the consumption of fully demineralised water and heating energy.

Depending on specific dimensions, a large-chamber decontamination unit offers ample space for 20 or 40 DIN mesh trays, allowing the reprocessing of standard (non-lumened) surgical instruments. The new reprocessing system can be used when large washer-disinfectors more commonly used for instrument reprocessing are temporarily unavailable, for instance due to servicing or validation work. Similarly, these larger machines can be used to tackle unexpected peaks, helping to keep turnaround times for instruments in mesh trays as short as possible. The reprocessing of surgical instruments is performed in compliance with the EN ISO 15883-2 standard and is validatable.

All large-chamber decontamination units have one thing in common: Miele offers reliable and reproducible reprocessing standards combined with short cycles and the efficient use of resources. This is not least the result of the new Combi Eco System which significantly reduces the use of fully demineralised water and heating energy. Demineralised water is returned via a manifold from several large-chamber washer-disinfectors to a buffer tank where it is saved for use in later interim and final rinse cycles. This saves on valuable and expensive resources and considerably improves a CSSD's green credentials.

Example: A run of five large-chamber PG 8528 washer-disinfectors regularly returns 175 l of fully demineralised water to the buffer tank, an amount sufficient for almost two full cycles. Based on an average of 7 cycles per day and machine, this equates to annual water and energy savings of more than € 5100 and a capitalisation period of only 5 years.

Hospital beds, too, are reprocessed in Miele washers in a safe and validatable process in the shortest of times – ensuring at the same time the protection of materials and electrical components. And naturally therefore, wissner-bosserhoff, a leading manufacturer of innovative and high-quality beds and furniture for hospitals and nursing homes, recommends that its latest 'image 3-w' series of hospital beds be washed in bed-washers from Miele Professional. There is also currently a cooperation with a focus on development between Miele Professional and Stiegelmeyer, a leading manufacturer of hospital beds with 30 years of experience in reprocessing machine-washable beds and also a member of the German bedding and container washer working group. The objective of this partnership is to achieve the safe and effective reprocessing of medical products with a particular view to ensuring process compatibility with hospital bed.

These features on large-chamber decontamination units contribute towards a significant improvement in the efficient running of CSSDs and bedding centres and are likely to further boost the success of these machines in the market.
