What’s for dinner today? Which programme is right for the laundry? And is the dishwasher full enough yet? Housework is full of small decisions like these that demand our attention day after day. Under its IFA 2026 motto, “The End of Housework Is in Sight”, Miele is demonstrating how connectivity, sensors and artificial intelligence can increasingly take over decisions like these and make everyday life noticeably easier.

Smart technology is steadily expanding what a domestic appliance can do. Appliances can recognise situations, interpret information and determine what makes sense at a given moment. This brings us closer to an everyday life in which we have to take care of fewer and fewer household chores ourselves: the Miele App* provides inspiration for a dish, the oven recognises when the food is cooked through, and the washing machine automatically removes cooking stains from white laundry. What begins as individual functions is increasingly becoming an interconnected system that handles more decisions and tasks for people.

G8 Diamond: A dishwasher that recognises, decides and acts automatically

With the new G8 Diamond, Miele is introducing an integrated camera into a dishwasher for the first time, providing the basis for a range of new intelligent functions. Using image processing and AI-based recognition models, AutoVision analyses the types of items inside the appliance and the load level. If enabled by the user, the dishwasher can use this information to adapt individual steps in the dishwashing process: if it detects pots or bottles, for example, it automatically activates the relevant programme options.

The G8 reaches its full potential when connected to the Miele App. Users can set personal preferences in the app – for example, specifying that the dishwasher should only start once a certain load level has been reached or not before a particular time. Together with AutoDos with integrated PowerDisk, Miele’s automatic detergent dispensing system introduced in 2018, and the new ExcellentDry hot-air drying system, this creates a connected system that organises an increasing number of steps in the dishwashing process itself – reducing both the number of decisions users need to make and the effort involved in dishwashing.

The future of laundry care: When AI does the laundry

The Miele concept study Cary on the future of laundry care shows how far this principle could develop in future. Programmes, temperatures, spin speeds, options and detergents add up to more than one million possible combinations of settings in modern washing machines. This variety makes it possible to care for garments according to their individual needs – but until now it has also required numerous decisions. Sensors and AI could take over a greater share of these decisions in future.

In Miele’s vision of the future, optical sensors identify fabric types and colours, for example. Based on this information, the appliance can tailor the programme and washing process to the respective load. Only a few steps would remain for the user: Load the laundry. Press start. Done.

CulinaryCoach: Personalised assistance with cooking

What shall I cook today – and what’s the best way to do it? When it comes to cooking, consumers today are faced with a multitude of options: recipes can be found on social media, in food blogs or in WhatsApp groups. Different recommendations regarding cooking mode, temperature and cooking time don’t always make the decision any easier. CulinaryCoach helps you find the right cooking method for the Miele oven from among these options.

The AI-based cooking assistant in the Miele app combines Miele’s recipe and appliance expertise. It provides recommendations tailored to the oven and answers questions about cooking and the appliance. Enquiries can be made via text, voice or image – from a photo of a handwritten family recipe to a description of a dish from your last holiday. Suitable programmes can be transferred directly to the oven – for greater confidence when cooking and consistently good results.

Connectivity takes care of more tasks

It is not only the question of how a domestic appliance performs a task that requires decisions. With dynamic electricity tariffs and a photovoltaic system at home, when an appliance runs is becoming increasingly relevant too. To help smart domestic appliances simplify these decisions as well, Miele’s approach to energy management is to integrate its appliances into the systems of various partners.

At IFA, Miele is showcasing another example of this growing network in collaboration with the Bulgarian smart home manufacturer Shelly. In future, Miele washing machines, dryers and dishwashers can be integrated into Shelly’s energy management system. Users simply specify on the appliance the latest time by which a programme should be finished. Within this time window, Shelly takes care of scheduling and, with a dynamic electricity tariff, can start the appliance at a time when electricity is cheaper. Other partner solutions already make it possible today, for example, to align the operation of domestic appliances with the availability of self-generated solar power.

Connected services could also make it easier to manage consumables in future. One potential scenario is Smart Subscriptions: based on usage data, connected dishwashers and washing machines could forecast consumption of PowerDisk and UltraPhase respectively and automatically trigger a repeat order. Users would no longer need to check their supplies regularly or remember to place the next order themselves. The first step on this path is a subscription with fixed delivery intervals. In future, the aim is to develop this into an intelligent, data-driven solution.
