Miele celebrates 50-millionth vacuum cleaner

Bielefeld, March 4, 2015 No. 047/2015

Vacuum cleaner production in Bielefeld since 1927 / Special anniversary models

Two new milestones in the history of Miele in Bielefeld have been reached: 88 years ago, Miele embarked on the production of vacuum cleaners and today, the 50-millionth unit in the history of the company left the production line. The tayberry red anniversary model will be donated to the Bodelschwingh Foundation in Bielefeld-Bethel where it will do service in a therapeutic living community.

Modern Miele vacuum cleaners stand for hygienic cleaning combined with low consumption. This is coupled with the proverbial durability and longevity of Miele products as evidenced by exhaustive quality tests, including a 1000-hour endurance test and sundry strain and crash tests to evaluate the casing, cable reel and castors. Currently, more than 7000 units are built each day in Bielefeld in two shifts.

Now Miele has launched two special models to mark this anniversary. 'The 50-millionth Miele vacuum cleaner is to be feted worldwide with our Celebration Series which is now already selling successfully', says Matthias Sander, Chief Product Manager for vacuum cleaners within Miele's domestic products division. This is already impacting production: 'Good order levels have been boosted even further', says plant manager Dr Stefan Breit. The campaign is due to run until the summer.

Maximum cleaning performance combined with low energy consumption

Depending on the series, the current cylinder vacuum cleaner models are now the 'Classic', 'Compact' and 'Complete' ranges. Classic models represent tried-and-tested Miele quality at an attractive entry-line price. The 'Compact' series stands for a compact design and ease of storage. 'Complete' represents the premium range offering the ultimate in terms of features and user convenience. The new range structure was introduced during the summer of last year, around the same time as the new EU energy label. This new legislation classifies appliances according to energy consumption, dust pick-up on carpets and hard flooring as well as dust emissions.

Most Miele vacuum cleaners achieve an A rating for energy efficiency and also excel in terms of cleaning performance and dust emissions – culminating in one model which even achieves an A rating in all four categories. But even consumers in the market for top-class cleaning performance and excellent value for money who are willing to accept marginally higher consumption will also find a machine from Miele to suit their needs. 'This way, we do justice to the requirements of the EU label and to the various needs of our customers', says product manager Sander.

Although only 6 months have passed since the launch of the EU label, Miele is already once again increasing the energy efficiency and cleaning performance of its vacuum cleaners. Key to this approach is the interaction between the EcoTec floorhead, the AirClean filter and the EcoComfort handle together with an improved suction hose aimed at streamlining airflow. All three components will initially feature in the Celebration Series alongside the anniversary model with its 800 W output. This results in a top A rating for energy efficiency, dust emissions and dust pickup on hard floors and a C rating for carpet cleaning. And all that, as Matthias Sander stresses, 'at an incredibly competitive price'.
