Miele washing machine qualifies for finals of Purus Innovation Award 2023

Gütersloh/Berlin, September 19, 2023 No. 114/2023
  • Patented technology for efficient washing of mops and cleaning cloths

  • High throughput and safe hygiene combined with low consumption

Compact dimensions and innovations previously the preserve of larger machine categories: With these characteristics, the Miele PWM 509 Mopstar 90 washing machine qualified for the finals of the coveted Purus Innovation Award 2023. The award is to be presented during the CMS, the world's leading trade show for contract cleaners and facility managers, in Berlin. For the finals, the jury selected three products each in six categories – with Miele represented among the large machines.

With 83 submissions, there were more entrants this time than ever before. The jury commended products, tools and systems which excelled through quality excellence in use and an exceptional overall concept. Tanja Čujić-Koch, Chairperson: 'The submissions testify to a dynamic environment in which ideas thrive and seminal solutions are developed'.

The finalist from Miele belongs to the generation of products called The New Benchmark Machines and needs no more than a footprint of half a square metre to wash 9 kg of mops and cleaning cloths. The machines excel with their outstanding performance combined with excellent energy-saving potential. Compared with the corresponding model from the previous generation, specific electricity consumption has been reduced by 13%, water consumption even by 50%. Nevertheless, cycle times are 9% shorter than previously.

This is the result of the interplay between various components, including for example Miele's patented pre-spin process which spins coarse soil and dirty water out of mops before the programme starts in earnest. At the same time, detergent residues and spent tensides are removed, allowing cleaning textiles to better absorb fresh tensides in the detergent. This process is part and parcel of all Miele wash programmes for mops and cleaning cloths which are impregnated with detergent and disinfectant in the machine – if required, in accordance with the provisions of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the Association for Applied Hygiene (VAH). The temperature of the wash programmes is monitored constantly.

Programmable dispenser pumps reduce the consumption of liquid detergents

Miele's finalist also reduces the consumption of liquid detergents. The dispenser pumps can be programmed accordingly – commensurate with the amount of water entering the machine, as a fixed volume of product or depending on the weight of the cleaning textiles. This option previously only featured on bigger models from the Benchmark series.

Like all machines from this series, the door on the PWM 509 can be closed by applying light pressure with just one finger. It then locks automatically at the start of a programme and opens again once the cycle is complete so as to increase operational security. The full-touch colour display enables the simplest of user interfaces, further enhanced by individually adjustable programmes in more than 30 languages.

The location-independent monitoring of wash processes and consumption is facilitated by digital machine connectivity and connection to the Miele MOVE portal. Facility managers can use this application on a PC, smartphone or tablet and can see, for example, when machines are finished. And, whenever needed, Miele Service is quickly accessible and detergents can be purchased from the Miele Shop with just a few clicks.

The Miele finalist is produced in Germany at Miele's Lehrte plant. The high-quality materials used include counterweights from Miele's own foundry. The machine has undergone practical endurance tests lasting 30,000 programme cycles, and, when it comes to the end of its useful life, 95% of all components can be recycled.
