New Miele test system for routine checks when reprocessing dental instruments

Gütersloh, September 22, 2020 No. 056/2020
  • Simple before and after comparison based on coloured bars

  • Rapid colour change directly on instrument surface indicates presence of residual protein

From October 2020, Miele is offering a unique combined system for performing routine checks during the machine reprocessing of dental instruments. The system comprises the new ProCare Sure I-PM process indicators, which provide a visual decision-making aid when reprocessing dental instruments, as well as the ProCare Protein Check. This enables a simple, qualitative routine check to be carried out during reprocessing, as any residual protein will be indicated by a change in colour on the instrument.

Both products provide optimum protection when used together as they complement each other. The ProCare Sure I-PM process indicators allow users to quickly ascertain whether the necessary combination of process parameters was satisfied during reprocessing in the thermal disinfector, compared against the validation. Cleaning performance continues to be determined in accordance with the validation guideline or EN 15883. The starter set contains two sheets, each with 32 indicators, allowing a quick and reliable routine check to be performed as part of daily operations. Once reprocessing has been completed in the thermal disinfector, a red, grey and blue colour bar are compared against a reference sample which was created during commissioning and initial validation. If the colour samples match, users can assume that the interactions examined in the validation, such as between water quality, temperature, time, cleaning agent, programme and rinsing mechanism, have worked reliably in the washer-disinfector. However, if a significant discrepancy is identified, it is important to investigate the cause.

If, following cleaning and disinfection, residue can be identified on the surface of an instrument, such as in the joints of forceps, the ProCare Protein Check is then to be used. Containing three pens, the set also enables a simple, qualitative routine check of the cleaning process to be carried out. A test fluid is applied directly to the surface of the instrument, is left to take effect for three minutes and is then rinsed off under running water. If the residue is of organic origin, a critical amount of residual protein will still be present on the instrument. This is indicated immediately by a colour change. The process is extremely simple, and as the test is performed after the final programme stage – thermal disinfection – it does not interrupt any workflows while the instruments are being reprocessed.

The Miele test system comprising the ProCare Protein Check and ProCare Sure I-PM for regular routine checks therefore guarantees maximum quality for cleaning procedures in the dental surgery – and increases patient safety.
