Robovac: Miele's Scout heads for success

The market launch of Miele's robotic vacuum cleaner was a huge success earlier this year. Worldwide sales have since far exceeded expectations. It is above all the excellent systematic navigation, its cleaning performance and the power of the rechargeable battery which has impressed dealers and end-users alike.

Hardly any other product group in the domestic appliance sector has enjoyed such rapid growth as robovacs. Smart navigation electronics, good cleaning performance and high-quality workmanship separates the wheat from the chaff. 'The expectations our customers have of a robotic vacuum cleaner from Miele are quite rightly high by comparison', says Gernot Trettenbrein, Division Director Domestic Appliances International at Miele. And that these expectations have been met in full is not only indicated by the sales figures: 'The retail trade has given a very warm reception to our Scout RX1 and the feedback from consumers is extremely positive', adds Philipp Markmann, product manager for floorcare products on the domestic appliance pioner's German home market.

What speaks loudly in favour of the Scout RX1 is its unique and new navigation system, its good cleaning performance and the particularly long battery charge and life expectancy of the lithium ion rechargeable batterie which last about three times longer than common rechargeable batteries and still perform as new even after 300 recharging cycles. In concrete terms, this permits 120 minutes of uninterrupted operation, equating to cleaning a floor area of around 150 m². 'With this robovac product, Miele is setting new standards in terms of the quality of cleaning and user convenience', says Dr Eduard Sailer, board member with the appliance pioneer responsible for technology.

The 'Smart Navigation', which borders on perfection, is only available from Miele in this form and combines the following components:

  • A so-called gyro sensor measures the angle of turn and changes in the direction of travel.
  • A digital camera integrated into the top cover scans the ceiling of the room several times a minute, ensuring that floors are cleaned track by track with utmost precision. Even areas along walls and other difficult-to-access places are covered without omission, resulting in entire suites of rooms, even with a complicated layout, being thoroughly cleaned.
  • Seven infrared sensors protect furniture against collisions and prevent for instance glasses left on the floor or flower vases from being knocked over; three further sensors protect the Scout RX1 from falling down staircases or stumbling at high thresholds.
  • Convenience features such as a timer and the Turbo and Corner modes further cater to users' individual wishes.

The Triple Cleaning System with two side brushes, a beater bar and a highly effective blower guarantee good cleaning performance. With its low build height of just 89 mm, the Scout is able to access areas below cupboards and sofas with ease. Once its work is done or when its battery needs recharging, it makes a bee-line for the recharging station before resuming work precisely where it left off.

The Scout RX1 was developed in collaboration with a young Korean robotics specialist which now manufactures the product exclusively for Miele. The quality and endurance tests so typical of Miele are performed at Miele's own Bielefeld plant in order to ensure that the Scout leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to reliability and longevity.
