Miele is modernising and expanding its plant in Euskirchen. The household appliance manufacturer is investing around 15 million euros in a logistics hall, a geothermal and photovoltaic system and an energy-efficient lighting concept. All of these measures are part of the company’s comprehensive future and sustainability strategy and are aimed at improving supply chain stability and reducing CO2 emissions.

With an area of 3,500 square metres, the new logistics hall was built in 15 months and has space for 7,500 pallet bays. The investment totals 15 million euros and includes a heating, ventilation and cooling system as well as a photovoltaic system (output: 394 kilowatt peak). This is equivalent to the output of around 40 PV systems in private households. Additionally, the hall has modern LED lighting with motion detectors, which also helps to save energy. It is in full compliance with the energy standards of the Building Energy Act (GEG), and the hall also has a digital warehouse management system.

The investment includes a new geothermal plant and heat distribution measures. Around 100 geothermal probes provide environmentally friendly heating and cooling for a production and storage area of 16,000 square metres. The plant generates 1,145 megawatt hours of heat. This is equivalent to meeting the power requirements of about 110 private households. This saves around 285 tonnes of carbon dioxide compared to conventional gas heating systems. If you include the 158 tonnes saved by the PV system, in future Miele will prevent the emission of 443 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

“By expanding storage capacity and modernising the energy supply, we are sending a clear signal for the future of our plant in Euskirchen,” says site manager Hendrik Krämer. “These investments make an important contribution towards decarbonisation and securing our leadership in innovation and quality in the field of drive systems for domestic appliances,” adds Lars Peter Dierke, Vice President Global Construction Management at Miele.

The Euskirchen site plays a central role in Miele’s production strategy. Around 420 employees develop and manufacture drives, pumps, blowers and cable drums for the company’s own appliances, including dishwashers, washing machines, dryers and hoovers. The site’s wide range of competencies contributes significantly to the quality and durability of Miele products.
